A New Encounter with Folk Song
Our defenders are discovering Ukrainian folk songs from an unexpected perspective. They experience them not as something static or museum-like, but as a living organism — capable of sounding contemporary, evolving, and blending with different instruments and styles.
The songs flow freely from one genre to another: sometimes played with flamenco-like passion, sometimes in a blues mood, and at times becoming part of an improvised musical jam. It is in this exploration that there is room for personal stories, inner freedom, and play.
A Moment of Silence and Christmas Light
At one of the sessions, a quiet, almost Christmas-like atmosphere filled the room: participants sang Carpathian carols while bowls, gongs, and bells resonated around them. These instruments created a delicate sound space, naturally infused with Hutsul rhythmic energy.
In the combination of movement and stillness, strength and delicacy, a sense of inner balance emerged — something profoundly important in the rehabilitation process.
When Singing Becomes Creativity
Over time, singing transformed into true creativity. The Vinnytsia song “U poli bereza” took on the form of blues, and from a musical theme created by a veteran, the Superhumans Anthem emerged — a song filled with their powerful energy.
There was also a lot of laughter. Playful folk songs, rhythm, movement, and lightness — all of this helps to release tension, feel the body, and experience joy and freedom.
The Birth of the Superhumans Singing Group
Gradually, a real singing group is taking shape within the project. The most valuable part — the initiative was not imposed from the outside, but emerged organically from the veterans themselves. It is a space where they can create, sound together, and support one another.
Ahead lie new sessions, new songs, and new ideas. Currently, the participants are preparing a shared Christmas video greeting — a carol they will give to their families and everyone who supports their journey of recovery.
Because singing is also rehabilitation.
It is a way to regain one’s voice, breath, and the taste of life.
