In January 2025, the first voyage of “Titans Under Sail” took place, offering a comprehensive physical and psychological rehabilitation program for veterans through yachting in the Canary Islands.

Thanks to the support of The Y (YMCA of USA), two veterans from YMCA Lviv, Yuriy Bubes and Yuriy Vovkohon, were able to participate in the program and share their experiences.
“Our first trial journey across the Canaries on catamarans exceeded all expectations.
Our wounded warriors must know they won’t be left alone with their struggles.
Because this magical pause is essential—it allows them to reflect on their lives, and it provides a powerful metaphor: just like a ship, life can be steered.
You can navigate the waves and catch the wind, as long as you know your course and have a reliable crew.”
— Yuriy Vovkohon, Veteran Projects Manager at YMCA Lviv.

With the help of YMCA Lviv, the project’s founders — Korona Yachting Travel Company and the “With an Angel on the Shoulder” charity foundation — were able to swiftly form crews and enlist veteran volunteers. Veterans with amputations often find it easier to connect with fellow defenders who share similar experiences.
The first ten-day journey brought together two catamaran crews, including ten veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war undergoing rehabilitation in Ukraine, Latvia, and the Netherlands, along with nine volunteers.

The program prioritizes defenders with prosthetics who seek active recreation. Beyond the benefits of the maritime climate and breathtaking scenery, these journeys offer hands-on sailing experience, teamwork on board, and opportunities to connect with Ukrainian communities in port cities.
“I watch our undefeated, unbreakable men —securing catamarans on prosthetic legs, riding foamy waves on the beach — and I rejoice that life is triumphing over the war.
And I see the admiration in the eyes of people from all over the world, amazed by the strength of Ukrainian Titans.
That feeling of pride — for myself and for all veterans — makes me realize that none of this was in vain.”
— Yuriy Bubes, YMCA Lviv Board Member

Future “Titans Under Sail” voyages on yachts and catamarans are planned along the coasts of Croatia, Greece, and Italy. The organizers are currently seeking partners and sponsors to make these journeys a reality.
We hope this incredible initiative secures the funding needed to restore joy to the lives of more resilient Ukrainian warriors.
And YMCA Lviv will continue to support this and other vital veteran rehabilitation projects—because we are the force shaping the future!
